What does your religion/philosophy say about sexual equality?

Hello all:

What does your religion/philosophy have to say about sexual equality? And what are your own personal views on the matter?

Thanks to everyone who takes the time to respond.

  2. Creation Detective Says:

God created men and women to be equals but with different roles at home and in church.

  3. I refuse to allow 1984 to happen Says:

Well. I say equality for all.

  4. Ben Says:

I believe in equality for all.

  5. Oberon Says:

Buddhism (what I practice) states all are equal.

I have always believe this to be true.

  6. Sarahh ♫ Says:

My own personal philosophy might be considered sexists by some. But nature made men and women different for a reason. Women were built to bear children, and men are more muscularly built. Woman and men can both be very hard workers, but Nature made men stronger so they could do more physical labor.

Not to say that I disapprove of woman and men being totally equal. Because they should be. But they were meant to do different things.

Wiccan Atheist and I believe equality for all.

Every man should have a woman.
Every woman should have a man.

For this is ”right” in God”s sight.

Notice that I didn”t say: girl or boy, teen boy or teen girl.

    Full-grown adults.

  9. Ben Yehuda Says:

Throughout TaNaKh and the NT, there is no mention of any inequality between the sexes.

Outside influences and human doctrine, which were sort of ”incorporated” into nominal (but are in no wise an actual part of) Christianity, tend to portray women as being lesser than men.

Everyone has a place in this world, and that place is not necessarily defined by sex.

I am disheartened, however, by those who try to assume the mantle of the other sex – if women demand to be able to do everything that a man does, why do men not bear children? And if women claim that men cannot handle that particular ordeal, then such talk amongst “women”s rights” groups is a bit hypocritical, don”t you think?

None is greater or lesser – we just serve slightly different purposes is all.

I am for equality and against homesexuality and bisexuality

  11. Trish JPA and Jewish Pastafarian Says:

Judaism holds that women have greater “binah” than men; “binah” is a sort of spirituality, or sense of what is spiritual or right – it doesn”t translate very well. It doesn”t set up men as head of a household; it holds that men and women are partners, and that in a relationship, each has responsibilities to the other.

Orthodox Judaism says that only men can be rabbis; other branches of Judaism accept female rabbis, and many congregational presidents are women as well.

Orthodox Judaism keeps a barrier called a mechitzah between men and women during worship; the party line says that this is to prevent the men from becoming distracted (which I personally say is a cop-out; it”s definitely a remnant of second-class citizenship in my view). Other branches of Judaism don”t observe this restriction, as well as many others that once existed, such as laying of tefillin, wearing of a kippa or prayer shawl, or being given an aliyah during the Torah reading.

My personal view is that men are not women, and women are not men. Certainly I believe that a woman can do anything that a man can do, intellectually speaking. I do believe that there are differences that should be acknowleged and honored; not every difference is a negative sort of thing, in my opinion (I”d certainly never want to be a man, after all!) I definitely believe that studies, both religious and secular, should be available to both genders.

I think that we are equal. While my husband may be stronger than me, especially when we spar, I can take out a 6”2 200 some odd lb man with a round kick. He can do some things better than I can (cleaning, working on the computer….) I can do some things better than him (knowing what my son needs, driving(lol)) We are different and we compliment each other, but we are equal in all things that concerns who works and the like. He is an Atheist, so he thinks that I can work and that I am capable of taking care of myself. I am a Wiccan and believe that we each hold a place that is made for us, but it balances out beautifully.

  13. ~Heathen Princess~ Says:

Well, we”re equal but not the same.

There is no way to explain that with out people jumping to conclusions so I”ll leave it at that.

  14. LabGrrl .com Says:

As a Wiccan, I”ve got to go with equal but not the same, too.

And I agree with Princess..that”s a phrase people are going to make conclusions about!

  15. Karl S, JPA Says:

My religion does demand sexual equality.
Gender roles are cultural/tribal, not divinely dictated.

Consider that the management of the household”s assets, in Germanic tribal times, was the woman”s right only (the sign of status of the wife were the keys to the family”s lockers, which only she held). However, the man was the leader of the clan. It”s only fair.

    Compare that with Abrahmic religions.
Exceptionally, there were also women that fought in raids (see shieldmaiden).

So I”d say Heathenry is a relatively gender-egalitarian religion. Reconstructed Heathenry (as Asatru) more so than its Middle Ages counterpart, but yup.

However, men are not women and women are not men, they are different, although they do have equal rights, they might have somewhat different roles.
