I believe the only true way is to read all you can, taking notes along the way and come to your own philosophical conclusions. Right now I”m reading about Samuel Johnson as told by Boswell -So in some ways I”m “hearing” what Boswell heard – I will miss what is lost in translation.

Ancient philosophers used nature as a backdrop, modern philosophers use society as a backdrop.
Nature-open, live, wonderful and mysterious, creative and bountiful
Society-closed in, forced, dangerous and untrustworthy, limited and coveted.
I”d say the major difference comes from the fact that society is man-made, nature is not. Ancient philosophers knew of a spiritual nature to things, modern philosophers decontruct every spiritual emotion to its scientific root.
