There is already a good review to this book, so I will only add that I was somehow worried I could not understand it. Far from that, it is extremely easy to follow and in order to savour it one only needs to be a curious layperson. So my rate is 5 (content) and 4 (pleasure).

I also suggest reading the following books in addition to Pessin”s interesting book: a) “The Phenomenon of Religion: A Thematic Approach,” by Moojan Momen (astonishingly encyclopedic); b) “Shamans, Sorcerers, and Saints: A Prehistory of Religion” by Brian Hayden (great overview of religion origins and development); and c) “Alternative Tradition: A Study of Unbelief in the Ancient World (Religion and Society)” by James A. Thrower.

I have to say that when I finally got my hands on a copy of “The God Question”, I couldn”t stop myself from telling anyone who would listen that Andrew Pessin”s writing is the most clear and concise distillation I”ve ever seen of arguments concerning God from some of the most confusing and dense philosophers out there, and that I wished that I had had a copy of it as a reference for my Undergraduate studies. That anyone who ever takes a Philosophy of Religion class, Ancient, Medieval, Modern, or, for that matter, is only interested in learning the religious ideas of any philosopher not traditionally know as a theologian, should have this book on hand. Its cross referencing of related topics and writers provides a context for each author, as well as his or her arguments and ideas. It”s like a “choose your own adventure” of Theological Philosophy – you could spend days by starting at any one article and using the cross references to jump around and lead yourself down a new and different path every day with this book”s incredible and simple presentation. Very, very impressive, indeed. A MUST HAVE FOR ANY THINKER”S BOOKSHELF!

I took this book along to enjoy on our recent summer vacation. What a great text – very thought provoking, insightful and incisive. The book is arranged in a series of short (2-3 page) essays that distill the thoughts of history”s greatest thinkers into digestible snippets. “The God Question” at once provides fabulous fodder for conversation over the family dinner table while also stimulating deeper thought and further primary source research. I have wildly recommended this book to my friends! I very much enjoyed reading the book. Thanks for the great read.
