Sunday, August 22nd, 2010

Product Description
In recent years, many members of the intellectual community have embraced a radical relativism regarding knowledge in general and scientific knowledge in particular, holding that Kuhn, Quine, and Feyerabend have knocked the traditional picture of scientific knowledge into a cocked hat. Is philosophy of science, or mistaken impressions of it, responsible for the rise of relativism? In this book, Laudan offers a trenchant, wide-ranging critique of cognitive relativi… More >>

This is a documentary about the Greek land of ancient Chalkidiki and Macedonia. Chalkidiki and especially the Athenian colony of Stageira was the birthplace of Aristotelis, one of the most famous Greek philosophers. Aristotelis is one of the greatest ancient Greek philosophers. He was born in 384 BC in the Athenean colony of Stageira in Chalkidiki, his father was a doctor and his name was Nikomahos! After his father’s death, he was raised by his uncle, Proksenos. In 367 BC he became Plato’s student in Athens. Aristotelis was also the teacher of Alexander the Great. King Filippos wanted his son to get in touch with the wisdom of his Greek heritage and Aristotelis was the perfect teacher! In fact Alexander said “To my father i owe my life, but to my teacher i owe my good life”. I was pondering on philosophy, religion, science and atheism…?

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

and after a while came to a conclusion that the existence of science and the inability to prove there is a God or a divine creator indeed disproves it.

I have no idea how I came to that conclusion. Anybody else out there agree with it?

Muslim Heritage In Our Schools – Bettany Hughes

Friday, August 13th, 2010

Historian Bettany Hughes introduces us to the underappreciated wealth of Muslim Heritage that exists all around us in our everyday lives. She tells us how Universities, free education for children (male and female), public libraries, algebra, number theory, trigonometry, geometry, modern chemistry, the works of Greek philosophers like Aristotle and many other educational achievements came to us from Muslim civilisation. Discoveries made from the 7th to 17th centuries by multi-faith scientists in Muslim civilisation have had a huge but hidden influence on the modern world. Knowledge from Assyrian, Babylonian, Chinese, Egyptian, Greek, Indian, Persian and Roman civilisations was highly prized in the Muslim world. Men and women scholars advanced science by building upon the ancients and making breakthroughs that paved the way for the European Renaissance. This Golden Age of Discovery in the Muslim World (southern Europe, Africa, Middle East, Asia and to China) took place during the so-called Dark Ages of Europe. Muslim civilisation promoted free-thinking, rationalism and tolerance. Many scholars expressed their faith by seeking to serve society and improve quality of life for others.
