how have ancient greek philosophers impacted modern astronomy?

Best answer:

Answer by good4amber
The Greeks discovered that the earth was a sphere by several methods and the philosopher Eratosthenes measured the circumference of the earth to within about 300 kilometers of today’s generally accepted value. In about 200 BC Aristarchus first stated that the earth revolves around the sun but most philosophers argued that everything revolves around earth.

I have to write a “exhibition label” where you describe the theme of “scientific revolutions in modern art” and it has two be 1-2 pages long (double spaced) but im having soooo much trouble with it D: someone please help me. Here are the four pictures.

Death of Marat, by Jacques-Louis David

A Philosopher Giving a Lecture, by Joseph Wright

Iron Bridge, built by Abraham Darby & Thomas Pritchard

Improvisation 28 (second version), by Wassily Kandinsky

Best answer:

Answer by redunicorn
Death of Marat, by Jacques-Louis David Murat was a leader in the French Revolution.

A Philosopher Giving a Lecture, by Joseph Wright
This shows how scientists became excited over discoveries.

Question by Richard O: Is it possible for a laymen to be a professor?
I have considered my self intellectually exceptional since my parents have always told me that but i now fear that i am just like everyone else and that scares me. I wish to pursue a Ph.D in philosophy. the only reason i do it is not for the money(the job market is very limited in that aspect). But because i genuinely want to learn everything i can about it. I even considered being a modern philosopher if possible but lately i doubt that possibility. I am a high school graduate, and for the most part high school was easy for me, i just never applied myself. English my my easiest assignment, math took some effort. I have not received a scholarship because well my grades were not Excellent. I am considering being an electrician as a trade to pay for college if the marines reject me. but i have met some individuals who were just entering high school as i was leaving and i was Absolutely blown away by their brilliance. This had me question my own abilities and scrutinize my motives and true potential. I have taken several seemingly legit online I.Q tests(i know they didn’t count but i consider them a rough estimate) the first time i recieved a 110, the highest i’ve ever received is 132. but i think my results are foley because of taking so many of these test and learning the patterns to the problems. so i ask anyone who has been through what i am going through, or if someone could remotely answer my question. am i a laymen, and or is it possible for me to accomplish this goal or will i end up being a tradesman the rest of my life and see my ambition become a fantasy?

Best answer:

Answer by eri
If you want to teach at the college level, you need at least a masters in your field, and a PhD to teach at the 4-year college or university level. You’re right in that there are very few job openings for humanities profs, especially philosophy where there really isn’t anything else you can do with that PhD besides teach. But what you do is up to you. You don’t need to have a genius-level IQ to become a college prof, and online IQ tests aren’t accurate anyway. I think those scores would suggest you’re not as exceptional as you might think, since online tests tend to inflate your scores to begin with, but really motivation is the key to completing a PhD.

i was asking a question on What your personal views are on Buddhism. Some of the answers were inadequate so i have to ask again. What are your personal views on Buddhism? Have you heard of Buddhism?
Is it a religion or just a philosophy? What do YOU think?

I am a Theravada Buddhist and No you don’t need to be vegetarian to be Buddhist.

I’m a Buddhist too. To me it is much more than a philosophy because it has such powerful influence on a great number of people when philosophers influences on the people is more limited. I think thats the difference between Religion and Philosophy. Religions can bring powerful influence on people.

Some people say that Plato has invented philosophy. But actually, if Plato would have not exist, someone else would have done it, so its actual contribution to philosophy is quite miserable, beside being the first.

On the contrary, EMINEM is one of the greatest modern philosopher if not the greatest philosopher of all time. He is smarter and has more talent. He has learn how to use popular culture and is microphone and his quick flow to communicate his philosophy with the masses. Plato could have barely accomplish this if he was born in the year 2000.

Do you think that Eminem has achieved more in 1 CD than Plato in his whole life? Discuss!

Question by Brad: Is Debra Medina the new star of the American Right?

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/feb/28/tea-party-debra-medina-texas

According to the London Guardian (probably the leading left-wing newspaper in Britain), she is. Here’s an excerpt from the article:

When it comes to speeches Medina is no Sarah Palin. She has no need to write on her hand to remember her talking points. Instead her speech was a complex walk through her extreme anti-government philosophy, citing sources as varied as the Austrian school of economics, St Augustine and modern French philosophers. She said she wanted to get rid of property taxes and allow Texans to do whatever they wanted with anything they owned, whether that was dig for oil or build an extension. There was, she said, no constitutional basis for a federal Department of Education or an Environmental Protection Agency or the Federal Reserve. Texas should assert its rights almost as a nation-state, controlling over its own National Guard units. The disdain for government was visceral. The American way, she said, was simple. “There are two rights essential to freedom: private property and gun ownership.”

Best answer:

Answer by Justine 2
Medina is just one of many rising Conservative stars , where as Hillary said it took a village we are saying it will take conservatives to toss the idiots out of the village first .

Question by : Atheists, did you know of the scientists that believe in Creationism?
You believe that people believe in Creationism because they do not understand the evolution theory. Completely false. It would be like saying Communists to not want to be Fascists because they don’t understand well the Fascist ideology.

Everyone has its own opinion regarding everything. Also, a person naturally believes that the rest of people are stupid if they don’t share his/her ideas.
It’s not that we don’t understand evolution. We have another opinion.

Believing that complex biological processess like camouflage, worm’s regeneration, bird migration
formed by natural selections and believing they were designed are two different points of view.
They can’t disprove each other. Choosing what to believe from these points of view is your choice.

If you would like a list of different scientists, engineers, and doctors that believe in Creation, here is a link:

http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/List_of_scientists_who_support_creationism

WAS LOUIS PASTEUR AN IDIOT TOO?

“Posterity will one day laugh at the foolishness of modern materialistic philosophers. The more I study nature, the more I stand amazed at the work of the Creator. I pray while I am engaged at my work in the laboratory.”
(As quoted in The Literary Digest – 18 October 1902)
The Bible says “God’s wisdom is foolishness before man” and “Man’s wisdom is foolishness before God”

Clearly, there are two types of wisdom.
Our finite one which created Darwinist Evolution and God’s infinite wisdom
which inspired Creationism
SCIENCE IS BASED ON MAN’S LIMITED WISDOM WHILE RELIGION IS BASED ON GOD’S INFINITE WISDOM
THAT IS WHY MOST OF PEOPLE CANNOT UNDERSTAND RELIGIOUS IDEAS PROPERLY

Best answer:

Answer by Jay
The existence of a god plays no role in any scientific explanations of natural phenomena. There are no models of the physical universe in which god’s existence is required or useful.

Question by MarkH: Why does the Unabomber sound like your typical right-wing parrot?
The Unabomber was left-wing? No. He was RIGHT-WING.

EXAMPLE FROM HIS MANIFESTO:

” Leftists tend to hate anything that has an image of being strong,
good and successful. They hate America, they hate Western
civilization, they hate white males, they hate rationality..”

Words like “self-confidence,” “self-reliance,” “initiative”,
“enterprise,” “optimism,” etc. play little role in the liberal and
leftist vocabulary. The leftist is anti-individualistic,
pro-collectivist. He wants society to solve everyone’s needs for them,
take care of them.”

“The leftist is antagonistic to the concept of
competition because, deep inside, he feels like a loser.”

“Modern leftist philosophers tend to dismiss reason, science,
objective reality and to insist that everything is culturally
relative.”

“If our society had no social problems at all, the leftists would
have to INVENT problems in order to provide themselves with an excuse
for making a fuss.”

This guy sounds like your typical right-wing nut. He attacks the left over and over again and never once mentions the right. The only two times he mentions conservatives is to call them fools for supporting tradtional values while supporting technology and for attacking big government regulation when big business is just as bad.

Other than that, all right-wing.

Best answer:

Answer by Brad
He is attacking the left because the left is hypocritical and does not adopt his extreme variant of environmentalism.
