Modern proofs for and against God?

Question by WB: Modern proofs for and against God?
I have done some research on historical proofs for and against the existence of a God or Gods (Anselm, Aquinas, The Problem of Evil, etc), but I am looking for some modern proofs by philosophers to explore. Can anyone direct me to some philosophers and/or online sources regarding this? Thanks!
Thanks for the well thought-out answer Geet! You really helped me out. Now I realize that I shouldn’t ask questions to further my knowledge, but rather remain in ignorance like you. Is it blissful?
Oh yeah, and just to clarify;

I am not looking for proofs in order to change my belief about god in any way. I simply want to see some modern examples to enhance my knowledge about the subject. I personally don’t believe you can prove the existence of God, but I am curious to see examples, and study where those examples succeed and fail logically. Thanks to all who have given links so far!
Giacommo,

Thanks for mentioning Dennett and Dawkins! I’ve read Darwins Dangerous Idea and The Blind Watchmaker….great books!
Thanks Hac, I’ll check those out!

Do quantum and chaos theories provide a robust argument against determinism?

Thursday, August 25th, 2011

Question by Jon: Do quantum and chaos theories provide a robust argument against determinism?
I often wondered this when at university, but couldn’t find any modern philosophers who discussed it.

I suspect this is because you can’t really answer the question unless you understand the theories, which basically means you have to be a scientist. Doh!

Are there any scientific philosophers, or philosophical scientists who would like to have a stab at this, or has anyone written coherently on the subject?

‘Quantum’ and ‘Chaos’ are actual, bona fide theories of physics…..not philosophy. That’s probably why you couldn’t find anything.

Spend a little time in the physics department….you know….where actual hardcore information happens.

The philosophy department is just where they ‘think’ about things….you don’t have to actually DO anything there.

Are most philosophers against relativism?

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011

Question by ¡Marinabear!: Are most philosophers against relativism?
After taking an Ancient Philo class, I decided to change my major to philosophy because I liked it so much. The main idea that really caught my eye and clicked was relativism. I instantly got into the idea, and the more I read about it, the more I liked it. However, most of the ancient Greek philosophers (and modern philosophers, as far as I know) are completely against relativism. So I guess my question is, why? Are there notable, respected philosophers who were pro-relativism? Thanks!

There are two kinds of truth: relative and absolute.
Discovering one and how it relates to the other is certainly a big area for debate…. because as you may have noticed… it all depends on perspective.

What do you think? Answer below!

Boasting Against the Branches Part 4 Teaching.mp4

Romans 11 is one of the most neglected of Scriptures in the New Testament. The reason should be obvious. In this chapter, Paul warns the new Gentile believers against an arrogant, haughty attitude towards the Jewish people. Here are his words. “Do not boast against the branches. But if you do boast, remember that you do not support the root, but the root supports you.” While Paul warns against this attitude, he seems to have the sense that this is exactly the attitude that will emerge from the Gentile-dominated Christian religion. Unfortunately, his intuition was correct. After the second Jewish revolt in 132-135AD, the leaders of the new Christian religion were no longer Jewish. Gentiles became the new leaders of Christianity. They were Greek philosophers and were anti-Semitic to the core. Join us as Dr. Booker explains how they changed the Christian cross into the Church’s sword. For the most part, the early Gentile Christian leaders had little regard for Jewish people. Many of them taught Greek philosophy and brought a Greek world view into the church. They lacked the necessary Hebraic background that would have helped them keep the church connected to its Jewish roots. Although they had accepted Jesus in their heart, Plato ruled their mind. Furthermore, their attempt to merge Greek philosophy with the Hebrew Scriptures resulted in their adopting teachings and perceptions that were often more Greek oriented than Jewish. This means they were not biblical! The church is

Israeli weapons against aid flotilla Marmara

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

We decided to do some research on the matter of Israeli weapons on board the flagship Mavi Marmara as there were contrasting reports between Israel officials and passengers and crew of the aid flotilla. We unearthed a BBC TV Newsnight Report of June 1 2010, one day after the raid, about an Israeli commando being seen brandishing a potent Uzi sub-machine gun at the stern of the Marmara. Our weapons expert took a look a the CCTV video presented by Newsnight and compared it with different models of Uzi sub machine guns. The evidence is that it is highly probable that Israeli commandos were armed with powerful machine guns and not just pistols on board the flagship, as assured by Israeli officials including Ehud Barak. Benjamin Netanyahu and Mark Regev at the time. A few days later, on June 9 a YouTube website appeared with images showing two Israeli commandos kicking somebody on the floor. We enhanced and slow motioned the available images to compare both machine guns. It doing so it became clear that the commandos are shooting at somebody on the floor ‘execution style’. There is similar video broadcast on May 31 2010 by Russia Today (see favorites). It is a fact that the Israeli commando shown on the YouTube video has a weapon as it can be clearly seen being used. The weapon appears to be a machine gun of the Uzi type with silencer and extender which makes it a length of about 90cm (50inches). Both commandos are seen kicking somebody on the floor and seconds later one of
