What can you do with a degree in Religion & Philosophy?

Wednesday, July 6th, 2011

Question by Bryan: What can you do with a degree in Religion & Philosophy?
I have a very keep interest in religion and philosophy. Only thing about that is, my understanding of the Bible is a little different than that of most modern-day Christian denominations. I also do not practice Sunday being the Sabbath. In any case, what careers could a person have with that degree if there is a good chance that they won’t be an ordinary Christian minister?

Are there any other avenues and are the prospects of getting a career having a degree in Religion and Philosophy good?

If you get a PhD you might be able teach religion at the college level. You could become a journalist and write about religious news and issues. You could find a position working in an interfaith organization.

There are also many jobs in government, businesses, and nonprofits that require a college degree but no particular major.

With a philosophy/religion BA degree can I transfer into a philosophy masters program?

Question by Nathan: With a philosophy/religion BA degree can I transfer into a philosophy masters program?
The school I’m trying to get into next year has a combined philosophy and religion department and doesn’t offer a large variety of strictly philosophy classes. Long term, I intend on obtaining a masters and phd in just philosophy. So my question is this: with a phil/rel BA degree, will schools accept me into their masters and eventual phd programs for philosophy?

There should be no problem. Just be aware there are like 50 PhD holders in philosophy for every tenure track position that opens up. And that there is no other work for a PhD in philosophy that actually requires the degree.

What can I do with a degree in metaphysics?

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

Metaphysics is a branch of philosophy. It is the branch of philosophy asking “what exists?” What entities form this universe? Metaphysical studies can concern difficult, perhaps unanswerable, questions bordering theology. Ayer, (1971) used the term “transcendent metaphysics” for proposals of existence beyond the observable universe. Like Kant, he denied them a part in logic. As used here, metaphysics includes any suggestion that something, not immediately obvious, does exist.
