Question by thecatphotographer: Why do so many people hate the French?
I am Italian, and of course I want Italy to win tomorrow!!!

But I can’t understand why so many people hate the French. Not only their team, but the nation in general.
I’ve been to France several times, and I can tell you it’s a charming country. Paris is one of the most beautiful cities ever. France has good wine, good cheese, and its sophisticated cuisine is one of the most appreciated worldwide along with the Italian. They don’t eat just frogs or snails. Granted, the French sometimes do sound a little snobbish and they do pronounce foreign names their own way, but they have good reasons for being proud of their country. They have a great cultural heritage — novelists, poets, philosophers, painters, sculptors, architects. Modern art was born in France with the Impressionists. They were the first country to be a republic while all surrounding countries were still monarchies. Not all of the French vote for LePen or are racist. So, why do you people hate them?

Just curious…

Heldon is a French electronic rock band created in 1974. The name of the band was taken from the 1972 novel The Iron Dream by Norman Spinrad. Like its predecessor Schizo, it is above all the group of guitarist Richard Pinhas who released a large number of albums under his own name. He has worked with numerous collaborators among which musicians of the band Magma as well as philosophers such as Gilles Deleuze (of whom he was a student) and writers such as Norman Spinrad and Maurice Dantec (the Schizotrope project). Influenced by the work of Robert Fripp and Brian Eno, the music of Richard Pinhas and Heldon is sui generis and innovative and has in its turn greatly influenced the field of electronic rock. The first releases under the moniker Schizo and later Heldon were entirely self produced and self distributed. en.wikipedia.org fr.wikipedia.org fr.wikipedia.org

Il a connu au plus haut point cette ouverture de pensée. Et il doit la connaître de nouveau. Voilà ce que souligne, avec force, cet essai limpide. Gary Gutting tells the story of the development of a distinctively French philosophy in the last four decades of the 20th century. His aim is to arrive at an account of what it was to 'do philosophy' i

Candide, ou l’Optimisme (pronounced /ˌkænˈdiːd/ in English and [kɑ̃did] in French) is a French satire written in 1759 by Voltaire, a philosopher of the Age of Enlightenment. The novella has been widely translated, with English versions titled Candide: or, All for the Best (1759); Candide: or, The Optimist (1762); and Candide: or, Optimism (1947). It begins with a young man, Candide, who is living a sheltered life in an Edenic paradise and being indoctrinated with Leibnizian optimism (or simply Optimism) by his mentor, Pangloss. The work describes the abrupt cessation of this lifestyle, followed by Candide’s slow, painful disillusionment as he witnesses and experiences great hardships in the world. Voltaire concludes with Candide, if not outright rejecting optimism, advocating an enigmatic precept, “we must cultivate our garden”, in lieu of the Leibnizian mantra of Pangloss, “all is for the best in the best of all possible worlds”. Candide is characterised by its sarcastic tone, as well as by its erratic, fantastical and fast-moving plot. A picaresque novel with a story similar to that of a more serious bildungsroman, it parodies many adventure and romance clichés, the struggles of which are caricatured in a tone that is mordantly matter-of-fact. Still, the …

MPP Seminar #5 with Francois Dosse 2010-04-22 : Philosophie et Societé, in french and will also appear in an english speaker version. The next guest in our Philosophies of Management Seminar Series is one of the leading historians of contemporary French philosophy. Amongst Francois Dosses first contribution is a two volume work on the French structuralist and poststructuralist philosophers. He then published several philosophical biographies of eg Michel de Certeau, Paul Ricoeur and, most recently, Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari. In the book The Empire of Meaning he poses the much relevant question; what comes after post-structuralism? In this volume Dosse offers a challenging overview of actual tendencies in social philosophy that indicate how studies of organizations, technology and management (of kind practiced eg at CBS) have turned into sources of inspiration for innovative attempts to break out of the theoretical anti-humanism of the end of last century. How could management research influence philosophy?
