Is it true that many of the Greek philosophers came from Turkey?

Sunday, July 10th, 2011

Question by graffeng: Is it true that many of the Greek philosophers came from Turkey?
Are there any famous modern philosophers in Greece or Turkey?

Best answer:

Answer by marc
Yes, especially the pre-Socratics who lived across the Aegean in Ionia in Asia Minor which is modern Turkey. Many came from the town of Miletus. I believe Thales came from Miletus. I do not not believe that either Greece or Turkey is well know for its modern philosophers. Their best days may be behind them.

Just .49 a month. Arthur Schopenhauer (22 February 1788 — 21 September 1860) was a German philosopher known for his pessimism and philosophical clarity. At age 25, he published his doctoral dissertation, On the Fourfold Root of the Principle of Sufficient Reason, which examined the four separate manifestations of reason in the phenomenal world. Schopenhauer’s most influential work, The World as Will and Representation, claimed that the world is fundamentally what we recognize in ourselves as our will. His analysis of will led him to the conclusion that emotional, physical, and sexual desires can never be fulfilled. Consequently, he eloquently described a lifestyle of negating desires, similar to the ascetic teachings of Vedanta, Buddhism, Taoism and the Church Fathers of early Christianity. Schopenhauer’s metaphysical analysis of will, his views on human motivation and desire, and his aphoristic writing style influenced many well-known thinkers including Friedrich Nietzsche, Richard Wagner, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Erwin Schrödinger, Albert Einstein, Sigmund Freud, Otto Rank, Carl Gustav Jung, Leo Tolstoy, and Jorge Luis Borges. In these lectures, originally delivered at Washington, DC’s National Gallery of Art in 1965, acclaimed historian of philosophy Isaiah Berlin addresses the origins of what he deems “the greatest single shift in the consciousness of the West that has occurred.” His focus, apart from some digressions into Montesquieu, Hume, and Rousseau, is on the German philosophers of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and he runs through the contributions of Herder, Kant, Schiller, Fichte, Schlegel, and others in turn. He also shows how romanticism would later influence both the existentialists and the fascists, but paradoxically have its greatest influence upon the emergence of a liberalism that seems at complete odds with the romantic sensibility.

Does China get stronger roots from Buddhist/Taoist religion or Confucian philosophy?

Thursday, March 3rd, 2011

Considering that there is some non-scientific superstition and even some karma/dharma afterlife talk involved in Buddhism/Taoism I’ll consider them religions. Confucianism is more a philosophy. Does China get more roots from it’s philosophy or religions? I’d argue it gets more from its Confucian roots. Buddhism/Taoism came later.

A Hurrian Cult Song from Ancient Ugarit

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

The most ancient example of written song. A hymn to Nikkal, wife of the moon god. The text is written upon a fragmented tablet and, therefore, is incomplete. The hymn has four stanzas, each with a refrain. Stanzas 1 and 4 are imitation, and stanzas 2 and 3 are identical musically. The singer is accompanied by a lyra. The lyra harmony is predominantly in thirds and sixths, a few fourths, and one fifth. There are startling similarities between the Babylonian principles of music theory and those used by ancient Greeks. Moreover, the Babylonian principles antedate the Greek ones by more than a millenium. The Babylonians seem to have used music exclusively in connection with religious observances and festivals. The names of lyra/kithara strings and musical pitches were related to their cult deities and to the planets in a cosmology similar to Greek philosophers’ “harmony of the spheres.”
