They are concerned with the how in order to better the conditions of the tree always for use and exploitation. They are not concerned with its philosophical aspect and lesser still with its metaphysical indications.

It is when we bypass science and consider science as one step in an overall outlook that we see the shortcomings of science. It is when we consider the tree in its ultimate questions that require simple answers that we become aware of its dimensions, extra-scientific, but real.

It is when we bypass science and look the tree in the light of ultimate knowledge that the tree becomes vital and principle in our outlook. It is when we examine the tree in all its experience dimensions, whether physical, mental, aesthetic, spiritual or sensual.

The scientist is limited by his science to the physical part and not to the other parts of experience that are, if not equally important, then more important and more comprehensive. This is why we claim that science is limited to one phenomena of an object or a thing. But man is an overall being that needs explanations not only of the how but essentially of the why.

Science, being limited to one aspect of an object, is short of explaining ultimate knowledge of the object itself. This where science stops functioning and becomes sterile and where metaphysics takes over the floor for offering explanations and interrogating into the reality of an object, be it a tree, a human, an animal or a star, a galaxy or the whole universe.

But the scientist needs proof for such a hypothesis. But, we laymen, have more intelligence to go beyond what we see and observe. We laymen can have a wider vision and a more comprehensive outlook to refuse to stick the sensible and see what is beyond the sensible namely the intelligible. We laymen cannot limit ourselves to what we see with our naked eyes, but go beyond to see with our mind’s eye, the handiwork of a great creator, an absolute power and intelligence that has brought everything into existence, us included and the scientists donkeys.

We do not have to brainy, nor be Einsteins, to realize that God is behind everything, the creator-designer and controller of everything. His heart was filled with pity for the suffering of mankind in the world, and he wanted to preach a path which would help us all in overcoming this suffering. He compared this to a man who had an arrow in his chest – what the man needed at this moment was not to know the length and diameter of the arrow or what wood it was made of but to get it out.

But soon after the Buddha had died, questions arose regarding the exact metaphysical position and beliefs of Buddhism. During these discussions, it was recognized that there were two distinct branches of thought, and this resulted in the split of Buddhism into its two main branches.

Hinayana is the orthodox school and is considered to be truer to the Buddha’s teachings. Hinayana follows Realistic Metaphysics/Ontology. In this, the existence of the world is recognized. But the world is said to have only relative reality. The phenomena of the world have no true reality, they have no independent ground of existence. One phenomena supports another, and there is no base at the end which supports it all. This is called Dependent Arising. Thus there is no true reality in the world, and hence although the world does exist, in that it cannot be called non-existent, it does not exist with full reality. In this way, the world lies between full existence and non-existence, between full reality and non-reality. Hence the suffering in this world is temporary only and we can get rid of this suffering by realizing this truth of non-reality of the world and following the Right Path.

Mahayana is the heterodox school. It was later than the Hinayana school, and its texts are mainly in Sanskrit. Mahayana follows Idealistic Metaphysics/Ontology. In this, the existence and reality of the world is denied. The only thing to have existence is the observer, our consciousness. We have no way of proving that the world we experience is anything more than a dream of our consciousness, hence the reality and existence of the world is said to be nothing more than that of a dream. There are three schools of Mahayana depending on the amount of reality they are willing to concede to this ‘dream’.

Sautantrika: in this, it is conceded that we cannot prove the reality of the world, but because we do see the world and all other human beings, it is ‘inferred’ from practical experience that the world exists. And so even though we cannot prove it, we should take the world to have existence. The rest of the philosophy follows Theraveda reasoning.

Yogachara: In Yogachara, the world is denied as a dream. But the reality of the observer is accepted, and the importance is of this observer, our consciousness. The world is said to exist like clouds against the sky, by deep meditation we can still these thoughts which float across our consciousness and thus achieve the state of Nirvana. The main school of Yogachara that is extant today is the Zen school.

Madhyamika: Madhyamika is the nihilistic school of Mahayana Buddhism. In this, it is said that since the world is a dream, all our thoughts and sensations are imaginary. Our consciousness also is shaped by our thoughts and sensations, there is no consciousness apart from thoughts-sensations. So once we quell our thoughts-sensations, we would find a void, Shunya. This Shunyata is the final truth.

In this way, Buddhism, though usually considered to be a single religion, is actually composed of many different schools of thought. But all these schools are unified in leading upto the final goal of Nirvana defined by Buddhism.

Often referred to as the “father” or “grandfather” of Western Philosophy, Parmenides lived and wrote during the fifth century BCE. His writings large reject the pluralist metaphysics that other pre-socratics proposed before him. We only have remnants of his only known work On Nature; however, the “Proem,” a versed introduction to the work, has been completely preserved.

The story begins with Parmenides traveling to the home, or underworld, in which the goddesses Day and Night reside. Two parts make up the work, the first being “The Way of Truth” and the second “The Way of Appearance.” Parmenides writes in an apocalyptic style which begs a number of hermeneutical questions; however, Parmenides seeks to critique the metaphysical theories proposed before him.

Parmenides contends that Truth is eternal and unchanging, because two methods of inquiry exist. Something either is or something is not. To Parmenides, it can never be the case that something is not because it is impossible for something that exists to “not be.” So, one must always consider something that is.

Thinkers prior to his era proposed metaphysical first principles that fundamentally required change or motion, a necessity Parmenides found absurd. For change and motion exist, something must transition from an is not to an is, and that which is notis an impossibility. Therefore, his first principle(s) started with the purest form of that which is: eternity and immutability.

Parmenides’ conclusions leave us with quite a few reservations. From his perspective, our empirical view of the world must change and/or re-explain notions such as change, generation, motion, and asymmetry. On the other hand, this narrative may caution us against the fallible reasons of man, as explained in a lengthy cosmology put forth by the goddess.

Scholars have issued a number of interpretations on Parmenides’ work. The first, most widely-held interpretation is that of strict material monism, meaning that the substance of the world is one, unified, unchanging whole, much like Thales, Anaximenes, and Pythagoras. Others contend that the extreme bifurcation of the work into “The Way of Truth” and “The Way of Appearance” represents the theoretical-practical, rational-empirical dialectic of philosophy in general. This dialectic interpretation still jabs at the pluralistic philosophies of earlier pre-socratics; however, it suggests a necessary consideration of timeless and unmoving metaphysics as well.

Another theory suggests Parmenides’ metaphysics of being as one of a “prime mover,” from which all “beings” come. More simply, metaphysics is eternal and immutable while physics, which derives its existence from metaphysics, appears in plurality and change. Likewise, other modal and perspectival theories have been put forth as well but simply regurgitate the meta-principle theory.

Parmenides very clearly had a deep impact on Western Philosophy. Most conjecture that he met the young Socrates in a visit to Athens. Parmenides thought, most likely via Socrates, made a great impact on Plato, as we see in his work Parmenides. Likewise, it is not a huge jump from Parmenides theories to Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave” in the Republic.
