Is much of modern ‘pharmaceutical’ science a scam ?

Sunday, March 18th, 2012

Question by Caesar J. B. Squitti: Is much of modern ‘pharmaceutical’ science a scam ?
Where is the scholar?

Where is the philosopher of this age?

Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe.

Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.

For the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength.

Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him.

It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.

Therefore, as it is written: “Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.”

What causes the modern generation of Americans to take every thing lightly and as a joke?

Sunday, February 12th, 2012

Question by : What causes the modern generation of Americans to take every thing lightly and as a joke?
It just seems nothing is a serious threat to them, America can beat any country, and they feel as if America will never be in danger. I don’t know about you but as a 64 year old man who served in a foreign war, I am a bit uneasy when I think of the future. The worst thing you could do is under estimate your opponent, and even worse then that is to believe we are all friends. A great Greek philosopher once said “Only the dead have seen the end of war”, your annoying little generation may believe that you and your Liberal values will end war, and war is not needed, I have some tough news for you, there will always be war, there will always be war, and eventually there will come an enemy who can size up America nicely, just as there was in WWII. We won’t always have the luxury of bombing of Muslims with unmanned drones and less then 1% of the populace serving in uniform

any modern european history experts? age of napoleon?

Saturday, February 11th, 2012

Question by mini mimi: any modern european history experts? age of napoleon?
please answer the following questions in as much detail as possible because my teacher’s really picky about short answer tests and i always leave out one or two points and lose points. thank you so much

46.Discuss Napoleon’s rise to power. What challenges did the Directory face? How was Napoleon able to put out a constitution in 1799? What does Napoleon’s early life and rise to power tell you about the man? Could a contemporary have predicted his greatness?

47.What exactly was the Constitution of the Year VIII and how did it secure power for Napoleon? How well did this constitution work? Why and how did Napoleon change it later? What was the ultimate source of Napoleon’s power?

48.”Napoleon was no military genius. His victories depended on the weakness and disorganization of his enemies rather than upon his skills as a general.” Comment on this statement. Do you agree or disagree? Be specific in your examples.

49.What were the different areas included in Napoleon’s realm? How did Napoleon rule his empire? Did his administration show foresight or did the empire ultimately become a burden which he could not afford?

50.Some have said that the greatness of Napoleon was dependent, not on his abilities, but rather on the success of his propaganda. What image did Napoleon want to project of himself, his laws and his empire? Pay special attention here to the art of the period.

51.Why was Napoleon so popular in France? Consider both his foreign and domestic policies.

52.Who were the principal personalities and what were the most important problems of the Congress of Vienna? What were the results and why were they significant?

53.What was the essence of the Romantic Movement? What factors influenced the movement and who were some of its major figures? Discuss specifically a poet, a preacher and a philosopher.

Modern Day Astral Projections ?

Friday, February 10th, 2012

Question by : Modern Day Astral Projections ?
Hi,

Can anybody out there perform an astral projection? I am interested to know how many levels of evil they are able to encounter. Japanese masters claim there are 9 levels of evil. Is this true?

In Chinese philosophy it is claimed that Mozi the philosopher had 9 war games against an oponent. Was this also an astral projection?

Much obliged,
Jacques.
PS
I am a Christian and interested to study Biblical eschatology, Taoism, Mozi, occult, exrocism, prophecy and End Times.

I have a PhD in Mathematical Statistics. So, I am nobody’s fool. Please respect my postings…

Since early man’s physiology and modern day man’s physiology are nearly the same, is history the difference?

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

Question by Jung Prada G: Since early man’s physiology and modern day man’s physiology are nearly the same, is history the difference?
Early man had less history to live off of; modern day school children learn more in one day of class than that which is learned in early man’s life time.

—————–
(skip these details if it is confusing)

…I know psychologist/philosopher Steve Pinker argued AGAINST it in lay terms in “The Blank State” positing that genetics attribute to the change and adaptation of behavior (which I plan on reading soon); it’s just that, is it true that history (or experience–MTheory is the bomb, he answered a similar question with most of this insight–) trumps the belief of a blank state, all the way down to the genetic level?
*’does’ having history make the difference between early man (and the lack of recorded/communicated history between the evolution of apes to man) and modern man (in that we have an accumulation of recorded history today more than anyone else in the past have ever had)

Exactly what you are asking is unclear.

Just from your short summary it has to be some of both and not exclusively one or the other.

What is wrong with modern economics?

Sunday, January 8th, 2012

Question by Who Cares: What is wrong with modern economics?
I was recently almost kicked out of my econ class for suggesting that economics is not the answer to what we should do, but what we predict will happen if certain actions are taken. The question of should we do it or not is a philosophical question, not economic. I told my professor that even if using fiscal policy promoted the general welfare, economics cannot say that the ends justify the means; that is a question for a philosopher. I told her that this is a major flaw in Utilitarian theory because one could say if we took 90% of the income of the top 1% of earners in the U.S. and spread it to everyone else, one could say that everyone is better off; the problem is that is it moral to take all that earned money from that individual? I also said that the value judgments of policy makers are of what they think are the value judgments of everyone, which are not necessarily the same. This implies it is virtually impossible construct policy to benefit everyone without hurting anyone. This concludes that monetary and fiscal policy are deeply flawed in their origins and implementation, therefore the best thing gov’t can do is get out of the way of the people and stop halting progress. Do you think this is a logical argument for the refutation of modern economics?

Best answer:

Answer by g
well, to a degree… except you go off the reservation with the assumption that “getting out of the way of the people” = progress… basically you prove that gov. intervention may not always be best or moral and then you just ASSUME that the other is better based on the fact that the gov. is not always great… apparently..

overall… it’s the same situation with everything… everyone doesn’t always agree, it’s just the “community standards” overall… same with law, economics, morality…

same with economics… morality is subjective, but if most people think that it’s a good idea, then it’s generally going to get done that way…

EDIT: in short, if I prove you’re stupid, it doesn’t mean I’m smart… I could also be stupid, even stupider than you… not saying you’re stupid, but just saying that’s the idea you present…

EDIT2: to apply your idea to law… you’re saying “since the courts do make errors and some people don’t like some laws… then that proves we should have no laws…” and it doesn’t prove that at all… it only proves that there are problems with the current system

A question in my philosophy class promted this question. I am interested in your thoughts. And no, I do not plan on copying them for an assignment. Unless they are just that damn good, of course. Just kidding, I can think for myself

Out of these philosophers, which would fit each the most?

Plato Aristotle, socrates, st augustine, Aquinas, lockes, hobbes, nietzsche, sarte, marx, hegel, mill, bentham, kant, hume, spinoza

Which philosopher would most favor the death penalty? Who would most oppose the death penalty?

Which philosopher would most favor stem cell research? Who would most oppose stem cell research?

Which philosopher would most favor universal health care? Who would most oppose universal health care?

Which philosopher would most favor government censorship of the Internet? Who would most oppose government censorship of the Internet?

Which philosopher would most favor a military strike? Who would most oppose a military strike?

. Thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by Thought Repository
Death penalty: Plato, Bentham, Nietzsche.

Stem Cells: Sartre, Mill, probably Marx.

Universal Health: Marx, Bentham, Mill, Sartre, Kant, probably Spinoza

Internet Censorship: Plato, Aquinas, Kant, Hegel

For A Military Strike: Marx, Kant (if it was a moral imperative), Hobbes, Sartre, Mill, Locke perhaps.

Aganst a Strike: Plato, Nietzsche, Socrates…

I left out Socrates on some questions because his views are too tangled up with those of his mouthpiece Plato.

Hume was a curious figure, more like a traditional conservative politically, though in philosophy similar to Newton as a scientist.
