In logic, which Philosopher’s method of logical reasoning is solidly adapted onwards to modern Philosophy?

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

Question by oscar c: In logic, which Philosopher’s method of logical reasoning is solidly adapted onwards to modern Philosophy?
Method which was never modified, disputed or made changes to as compared to Socratic/dialectic method which many consider it erroneous?
What is this method called?
Aristotle carried this line of reasoning further by holding that although the world of experience is our real world, genuine knowledge consists of knowing the reasons or causes of things. To reach these basic causes, man must follow certain laws of logic or true processes of thought. The pattern of true thought is, he argued, ‘Syllogism’ in which we move from a generally accepted principle to a particular.
ex.
All men are infidels
Ben is a man
George is another man
Ben and George are infidels.

Aristotle worked out the science of deductive logic completely that little or nothing has been added to it even to the present. He laid down all the laws and gave examples which men have been able to follow with success ever since.

berkleycenter.georgetown.edu September 24th, 2010 | The Difficulty of Being Good A Discussion with Gurcharan Das | Why should we be good? What exactly is dharma? On September 24, Author Gurcharan Das spoke about his new book, The Difficulty of Being Good, and how one of the world’s great works of moral philosophy and a cornerstone of the Indian mind illuminates the ethical dilemmas that we all face. Das brought light to the moral state of governance in India. India, as Das noted, is on a course for impressive economic growth; however Das posits that India suffers from a deficit of good governance and moral reasoning that has failed to carry the benefits India’s new prosperity to all her citizens. Das argued that leaders have neglected to apply the concept of Dharma to policy and daily life whereby exacerbating this gap. He explained that Dhama is a complex word that captures the idea of doing the “right thing:” it could be duty, law or virtue both in the near and/or long-term. Das provided current examples this governance failure (eg. in retaining and attracting effective teachers in the education system), while comparing current events with stories and teachings of the Mahabharat, the Sanskrit story at the base of many Indian spiritual and ethical beliefs. Politicians and business leaders today, Das noted, fail to look at the moral dimension of a problem, focusing rather solely on the economic and political. The concept of Dharma is not static, he said; dharma has

Am I a Modern Day Philosopher? If so, are there more?

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

Question by Am I Cool Yet?: Am I a Modern Day Philosopher? If so, are there more?
My deep thought is so overwhelming I don’t even know what to do anymore. I.e. I spend almost 3 hours just thinking about my existence, thinking about our society and co-existing individual lives. Its like I can take a ‘Birds Eye View’ over Humanity at anytime. Like I can, AT ANYTIME, just…Remote View anywhere. I dont have it mastered, but I can do it pretty good. I’ve also felt strong connections with an entity I believe. An entity of a higher plain. Now I know that most of you are like “Wow, NOW I know this dude is crazy.” But please understand that us humans, are more sensitive to the ‘unknown’ then you actually know. And everyday, my third eye is getting stronger, I can tell because I often see orbs, and shadow people, and I believe, astral forms just passing by. Im only a 18 year old looking for a higher purpose. And often my mind is physically feels like its pumping something, like its pulsating, and this energy is like WAY OVER WHELMING, and its like my mind is being hand messaged by God or something lol Like seriously, and it only happens when I channel my thoughts into the ‘Deep Abyss’ lol thats what I call it. Because that’s where I find most of my answers I look for. I used to use drugs, like Weed, and that fake weed, that REALLY STRONG fake weed, and I strongly believe that really enhanced my psychic abilities.
Yea, Im often viewed upon as ‘weird’ by people who do not understand. : /

Introduction to Political Philosophy (PLSC 114) In this last session on the Republic, the emphasis is on the idea of self-control, as put forward by Adeimantus in his speech. Socrates asserts that the most powerful passion one needs to learn how to tame is what he calls thumos. Used to denote “spiritedness” and “desire,” it is associated with ambitions for public life that both virtuous statesmen as well as great tyrants may pursue. The lecture ends with the platonic idea of justice as harmony in the city and the soul. 00:00 – Chapter 1. The Control of Passions 08:53 – Chapter 2. What is a good modern “ideas” novel?

Thursday, October 13th, 2011

Question by British Shorthair: What is a good modern “ideas” novel?
Do you know of a novel which deals with ideas which are currently exciting philosophers, journalists, and intellectuals? Historically, good examples of this genre include Turgenev’s “Fathers and Sons”; Mann’s “The Magic Mountain”; and almost all the novels of Aldous Huxley. They all have outstanding literary merit. Any thoughts about their 21st Century equivalents?

Modern proofs for and against God?

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

Question by WB: Modern proofs for and against God?
I have done some research on historical proofs for and against the existence of a God or Gods (Anselm, Aquinas, The Problem of Evil, etc), but I am looking for some modern proofs by philosophers to explore. Can anyone direct me to some philosophers and/or online sources regarding this? Thanks!
Thanks for the well thought-out answer Geet! You really helped me out. Now I realize that I shouldn’t ask questions to further my knowledge, but rather remain in ignorance like you. Is it blissful?
Oh yeah, and just to clarify;

I am not looking for proofs in order to change my belief about god in any way. I simply want to see some modern examples to enhance my knowledge about the subject. I personally don’t believe you can prove the existence of God, but I am curious to see examples, and study where those examples succeed and fail logically. Thanks to all who have given links so far!
Giacommo,

Thanks for mentioning Dennett and Dawkins! I’ve read Darwins Dangerous Idea and The Blind Watchmaker….great books!
