Introduction to Political Philosophy (PLSC 114) In this last session on the Republic, the emphasis is on the idea of self-control, as put forward by Adeimantus in his speech. Socrates asserts that the most powerful passion one needs to learn how to tame is what he calls thumos. Used to denote “spiritedness” and “desire,” it is associated with ambitions for public life that both virtuous statesmen as well as great tyrants may pursue. The lecture ends with the platonic idea of justice as harmony in the city and the soul. 00:00 – Chapter 1. The Control of Passions 08:53 – Chapter 2. What is a good modern “ideas” novel?

Thursday, October 13th, 2011

Question by British Shorthair: What is a good modern “ideas” novel?
Do you know of a novel which deals with ideas which are currently exciting philosophers, journalists, and intellectuals? Historically, good examples of this genre include Turgenev’s “Fathers and Sons”; Mann’s “The Magic Mountain”; and almost all the novels of Aldous Huxley. They all have outstanding literary merit. Any thoughts about their 21st Century equivalents?

Modern proofs for and against God?

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

Question by WB: Modern proofs for and against God?
I have done some research on historical proofs for and against the existence of a God or Gods (Anselm, Aquinas, The Problem of Evil, etc), but I am looking for some modern proofs by philosophers to explore. Can anyone direct me to some philosophers and/or online sources regarding this? Thanks!
Thanks for the well thought-out answer Geet! You really helped me out. Now I realize that I shouldn’t ask questions to further my knowledge, but rather remain in ignorance like you. Is it blissful?
Oh yeah, and just to clarify;

I am not looking for proofs in order to change my belief about god in any way. I simply want to see some modern examples to enhance my knowledge about the subject. I personally don’t believe you can prove the existence of God, but I am curious to see examples, and study where those examples succeed and fail logically. Thanks to all who have given links so far!
Giacommo,

Question by Michael: what do modern day jewish philosopher’s think of spinoza?

Best answer:

Answer by Christine
I doubt there’s a consensus. Here’s my view. He left Judaism to become a Catholic, hence his change of name from Baruch Spinoza to Benedict Spinoza. His philosophy was pantheistic, except for his becoming a Catholic.

Do you think that ancient philosophers were wiser?

Best answer:

Answer by I try
Maybe in their thought patterns, but we have allot more knowledge to work with now, then what they had back then…

They had their examples, but we have new ones, and the old ones…the more we know, the more we have to work with.

so as the ancient philosophers might say…define superior?
