Is there any place for philosophy in modern physics?
Thursday, September 8th, 2011Question by Jon: Is there any place for philosophy in modern physics?
I ask because I recently posted a question asking if chaos and quantum theories shed any light on the philosophical issue of freedom versus determinism. I had only one, rather patronizing, answer, which informed me that: a) quantum and chaos theories are theories (thanks for that) b) I should go to a physics department where people actually DO things and c) Philosophy is of no value because philosophers do not ‘do’ anything.
Would any physicists like to provide an alternative view, or indeed a better answer?
