how have ancient greek philosophers impacted modern astronomy?

Best answer:

Answer by good4amber
The Greeks discovered that the earth was a sphere by several methods and the philosopher Eratosthenes measured the circumference of the earth to within about 300 kilometers of today’s generally accepted value. In about 200 BC Aristarchus first stated that the earth revolves around the sun but most philosophers argued that everything revolves around earth.

Question by : Modern world history question 2.?
Compare the major ideas of philosophers and their effects on the democratic revolutions in England, The US, France, and Lain America. (Locke, Montesquieu, Rousseau)

Can anyone answer this please? Or summarize this for me?
Please and thank you.

Locke really didn’t have much of an effect on revolutions in England because he was writing at a time during and after the English Revolution but his ideas on Social Contracts and Government commented on the best form of government. He did have an effect on Montesquieu who became inspired by Locke’s liberal ideas.

Montesquieu however had a larger impact on US history. Although having no influence on the Revolution in America he’s works, The Spirit of Law, had a massive influence on the founding fathers and the constitution. His works argued for a separation of powers into three to prevent Tyranny; the Legislature, the Executive and the Judiciary (you see this in the President, Congress and Supreme Court). This was different at the time as many European states had totalitarian Monarchs who had control of all three powers.

Now im not too good on Rousseau’s effects on revolutions but i do know he had a big one on the French but im unclear as to why and also the US revolution. I know that his works revolved around the idea that a state should be governed by everyone in the GENERAL WILL of the people.

Rousseau and Locke agreed in general on the State of Nature and the basic nature of Man.

Question by busty_brunette: How might a feminist philosophy of religion approach the question of the nature and existence of God?
Would it be different from a male’s approach

Best answer:

Answer by iansamadhi
Actually it already exists. In Egyptian (Nut) and Pantheistic (Gaia) religions.
The typical male based religion will use a creator God metaphor, who makes things, and sets up the universe as a system of government. with God as king.
The typical female based religion views the world as an organic entity, a living whole, coming out of the womb of nothingness; alive now, as opposed to a machine, set in motion by a manufacturing creator, at sometime in the past.

Why do we never question the modern english translations of ancient secular philosophers and historians?

Friday, August 26th, 2011

Question by Believer: Why do we never question the modern english translations of ancient secular philosophers and historians?
originally written in ancient Greek, Roman, Egyptian…etc. in the same way that we do ancient religious texts? Wouldn’t those translations be prone to the same errors? Wouldn’t those translators be influenced every bit as much by the biases and pressures of their “employers” as biblical translators are by theirs? So why do we never question it?
@Joss Whedon is my God now—And, yet, many of those same ancient texts are used to try and discredit the Bible. They should be subject to the same scrutiny, don’t you think?
@ More fed up then you—I wouldn’t say they have any more influence today than they ever did before. They’re just used more often, it seems, to discredit the truth of the Bible.

Best answer:

Answer by Joss Whedon is my God now.
But they don’t influence the world like the bible does. The bible must be held to a higher standard because so many people follow it.
