Q&A: Are there any colleges that have mythology/world religion/philosophy studies?

Question by Gaby: Are there any colleges that have mythology/world religion/philosophy studies?
I’m going to be a sophomore this year in high school, and I want to start looking for colleges. I’m really into world religion and mythology around the world, and a little philosophy. But I’m having a hard time finding some courses/colleges. Ideas/Tips?

You can use www.collegeboard.com to find all colleges that offer certain majors. Philosophy tends to be offered by tons of colleges, so you should be able to find that somewhere. Religion/theology/comparative religions is also quite common. Mythology – far less common. But know that it’s likely that any college that offers majors like philosophy and religion and classics, as well as “area studies” like Middle Eastern Studies, Judaic Studies, etc., will offer courses related to mythologies. You’re really looking for a college that has a good, strong liberal arts program – Middlebury, Amherst, UMass Amherst, Smith, U Vermont, Cornell, etc.

Religion/philosophy similar to Buddhism but involves nature and mountains?

Question by SkatingJulian: Religion/philosophy similar to Buddhism but involves nature and mountains?
I remember reading about an Eastern religion/philosophy not very known that involved reaching enlightenment through nature and meditation in the mountains. I believe it started with a “Sh”. It wasn’t Jainism or Taoism. Anybody know what I’m talking about? Any help is appreciated, thanks a lot!
No, not Shintoism either. Actually I think it was a “Shu”.

What scares you most about religion/philosophy?

Monday, March 21st, 2011

For me, it’s when people are completely, obstinately certain in their beliefs. Whether you believe in God or not, when you close off your mind to new ideas, something is going wrong.

For example: “[Insert random group of people]s are definitely going to hell.”
If you believe in God, then you certainly acknowledge this is something that only God can know. If you don’t, it demonstrates the intolerance in the world.

“A patient is in the most trouble when all of his doctors agree on his diagnosis.”

The second people are sure of something, they stop asking questions/ continue exploring, and human societal progress comes to an abrupt stop.
