Does the “string theory” or “parallel universes” disprove “reincarnation”?

Wednesday, December 14th, 2011

Question by Javad: Does the “string theory” or “parallel universes” disprove “reincarnation”?
A number of old time (e.g. Antiphon and Parmenides) and modern philosophers (e.g. McTaggart and Julian Barbour) have hypothesized that, time is not a reality but an illusion. This means that “time is not a continuum as it is perceived” and “everything which has happened, is happening and will happen, is happening in a moment”.
Also, according to “string theory” an infinite number of different versions of our universe (parallel universes including even those with different law of physics) compose the concept of reality. Meaning that there are myriad number of universes parallel to ours in which our souls are experiencing universes with different levels of similarity to ours (calculated to be 10 to the power of 500 parallel universes).
I know that these theories are not scientifically proved and are only based on pure mathematics. But if some day they are proved to be true, would the string theory lead to rejection of reincarnation?? (If our souls are experiencing all the possible versions of reality (and all in a moment) what is the need for being reincarnated). Does it make sense?

The very nature of the theory itself (time being illusion, multiple paralell realities, etc.) would only reinforce the idea of “reincarnation”, though not on a linear frame.

For example, the perceived notion of life “ending” within this dimension or universe while continuing or being “reborn” in another parallel “world”. If one’s consciousness experiences or percieves one of these parallels at any one time, it would be an acceptable argument that, upon completion of consciousness within one paralell, consciousness reverts or jumps to yet another… being, in a plain sense, a “reincarnation” of consciousness within another world or life.

What were the flaws in Parmenides’ theory of change?

Sunday, October 23rd, 2011

Question by : What were the flaws in Parmenides’ theory of change?
I’m attempting to write a philosophy paper, criticizing Parmenides’ theory of change/being/reality (whatever). Can anyone point me to a source or name a book that gives info on what modern day philosopher think about Parmenides’ theory? Or what flaws Plato found in the theory? Do you have any opinions on Parmenides’ theory?

It would help very much. Thanks in advance to anyone who tries to help!

Question by Dream Little Darling, Dream: What philosopher shaped medieval theory in Early Modern Europe?
I have been looking for the answer to this question everyone, and I still cannot find it. I am writing an essay on this subject, but I cannot find the philosopher that I am looking for.

Answer by Dave P
What would you call early modern Europe? Do you mean someone who was medieval and shaped philosophy during that time or someone later who shaped how we think of the medieval period. If it’s the first, the biggest names in medieval thought who had a lasting influence were probably Thomas Aquinas and Roger Bacon.
