How do the achievements of ancient Greeks impact us/you today?

Friday, October 21st, 2011

Question by Ally, THAT girl: How do the achievements of ancient Greeks impact us/you today?
Personally, I feel without their philosophers, we may not have modern science/philosophy today. But, other than that, what do you personally feel Greeks have brought to you? Art, Theater, music?

Best answer:

Answer by Smotyn
I feel the biggest impact is the idea of cities.

The Greeks were arguably the first to congregate in areas in the masses, to build themselves into a city so that they could spend their time developing ideas and improving the race rather than trying to spend all their time surviving.

The Greeks saw cities as an escape from the wild and this allowed development within the human species.

I would say that this is perhaps the biggest impact of the ancient Greeks as it directly effects the modern world.

The Greeks tended to speak metaphorically because they had few scientific tools or methods to prove or disprove their thoughts and concepts.

However, they did have the power of observation and the ability to make cogent conclusions and hypotheses based on these observations.
