A question in my philosophy class promted this question. I am interested in your thoughts. And no, I do not plan on copying them for an assignment. Unless they are just that damn good, of course. Just kidding, I can think for myself

Out of these philosophers, which would fit each the most?

Plato Aristotle, socrates, st augustine, Aquinas, lockes, hobbes, nietzsche, sarte, marx, hegel, mill, bentham, kant, hume, spinoza

Which philosopher would most favor the death penalty? Who would most oppose the death penalty?

Which philosopher would most favor stem cell research? Who would most oppose stem cell research?

Which philosopher would most favor universal health care? Who would most oppose universal health care?

Which philosopher would most favor government censorship of the Internet? Who would most oppose government censorship of the Internet?

Which philosopher would most favor a military strike? Who would most oppose a military strike?

. Thanks!

Answer by Thought Repository
Death penalty: Plato, Bentham, Nietzsche.

Stem Cells: Sartre, Mill, probably Marx.

Universal Health: Marx, Bentham, Mill, Sartre, Kant, probably Spinoza

Internet Censorship: Plato, Aquinas, Kant, Hegel

For A Military Strike: Marx, Kant (if it was a moral imperative), Hobbes, Sartre, Mill, Locke perhaps.

Aganst a Strike: Plato, Nietzsche, Socrates…

I left out Socrates on some questions because his views are too tangled up with those of his mouthpiece Plato.

Hume was a curious figure, more like a traditional conservative politically, though in philosophy similar to Newton as a scientist.

Three guys are standing before Saint Peter at the Pearly gates. Peter asks a question to the first one and MUST get the right answer to enter. “Who were the first two people? ans Adam and Eve. Just then bells started ringing-birds started singing and behold the gates open. To the next a question “Who was given the ten commandments”. ans Moses. Just then the bells started ringing and the birds started singing, behold the gates opened. Then the last person was asked, “What was Eve’s first words to Adam”? reply Oh my,… that’s a really hard one. Just then the bells started ringing and …..

How would you describe modern philosophy?

Friday, August 12th, 2011

Question by NoOne: How would you describe modern philosophy?
What strikes me most is the switch in thinking and the return to sophism after the turn to the subject. Thanks mostly to philosophers like Descartes, Kant, and Hume.

What is your idea, however, in regards to modern philosophy, sophism, and objective/subjective truths?
So philosophy is only a confusing, pointless dieing subject? That is certainly disheartening. I am not surprised that the minds of today have been leaving societies such as this and ours. It seems that critical thought and thinking is not valued anymore? Am I wrong?

Someone who keeps an open mind; is not swayed by religious or political rhetoric; speaks well and makes sense; does not get angry when questioned; is open to any and/or all subjects.
This person could be anyone, no matter what profession. Some very humble people are great philosophers.

What would you say would be the philosophy or religion of this man?

Question by John Lennon is My Hero: What would you say would be the philosophy or religion of this man?
So I was talking to this guy, he is my hero. Just a real simple guy, not stupid, just simple if that makes sense. I asked him what do you think happens when we die? He’s like you know what I think we become stars just kinda shining forever. I really liked that response. He told me just be a good guy and you’ll do good. I was just wondering what exactly would you say is his religion or philosophy, he says he doesn’t have one but if you were to classify him. Thanks.

I wouldn’t think “religion” is the appropriate term for this kind of thinking. It’s sort of a metaphysical concept, this idea of his, and I would categorize it as more of an everlasting, optimistic outlook on the afterlife

garygeck.com for an mp3 of parts 1 + 2 combined. Hello, this is Gary Geck of Gary Geck.com. Kurt Gödel has been called the greatest logician since Aristotle and A Genius at odds with the Zeitgeist. The following is part 1 (of 2) of my reading of Kurt Gödel’s 1961 lecture called “The modern Development Of The Foundations Of Mathematics In The Light Of Philosophy”. As was typical of Gödel’s very private philosophical work, the lecture was never delivered. I now will read it in its entirety over two parts on youtube or in a single mp3 (found at garygeck.com It should become very clear that Gödel was a lone voice in his age of logical positivism, skepticism and analytical philosophy such as Harvard’s Dr. Willard Quine’s variety. Quine of course called the higher reaches of Set Theory mere mathematical recreation…a view clearly at odds with Gödel’s. According to Dr. Richard Tieszen of San Jose University, “The three philosophers Gödel found most congenial to his own way of thinking were Plato, Leibniz and Husserl.” In fact Gödel saw much of Western Thought as being on the wrong path since it had strayed from the influence of Leibniz in the 18th Century. It is surprising that Gödel promotes Kant (albeit in a modified form) with much enthusiasm in this lecture when Kant certainly helped to hasten the demise of Leibnizianism. Kant once called Plato’ work ‘babble’.

One doubt–Is Plato’s or Socrates’
teachings more applicable to modern times? Thanks!
