Question by I Am Legend: What is the highest FIRST novel advance you know of?
I know Stephen King received $ 400,000 for the paperback rights to his first novel, Carrie, in 1976 and Nicholas Sparks got $ 1,000,000 for his first novel, The Notebook, in 1995. And recently, Elizabth Kostova received a $ 2,000,000 advance for her first novel, The Historian. I was just wondering if anyone else knows of any huge advances for a writer’s first novel? Bigger than the two million The Historian got?

Also, I already know of J.K. Rowling’s $ 200,000 advance for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer/Philosopher’s Stone and though is a big number for children’s books, It’s still a small number compared to those listed above.

(Note: I am only interested in knowing about FIRST novel advances, as I know very well that modern authors such as Stephen King and Tom Clancy receive up to $ 10,000,000 per novel these days).

Best answer:

Answer by Frosty Lemmon
I think Kostova broke the record at the time, and that was a legitmate advance against royalties and not a fee for paperback rights, which is a very different thing (see below). BUT you have to consider whether that $ 2 million was for just the one book or part of a multi-book deal. Another big advance, which I think was for a single novel, was the $ 500,000 Jonathan Foer got for “Everything Is Illuminated.”

Charles Frazier didn’t get much for his first novel, but his second novel, which just came out ths fall, was sold for an $ 8 million dollar advance. Pretty huge, considering that all he offered the bidders was a one-page outline.

Paperback rights are not really the same thing as an advance against royalties. Most importantly, the person bidding for paperback rights isn’t taking much of a risk because the book has already been out in hardback, so they can see if it’s already been a success. Also, the licensing fee for paperback rights is almost always a flat fee, not an advance against royalties. That means the author gets that fee, and nothing additional in the future, whether the book sells one copy or 10,000,000.

An advance, on the other hand, means that if the book really performs well then the author will receive additional money eventually, once they’ve “earned back” the advance. For example, Hillary Clinton reportedly got an $ 8 million advance for her autobiography with a royalty rate of 12%. So that means that the publisher pays her 12% of its revenue on the book (revenue, not profits). They already advanced her $ 8 million of that, so she didn’t get anything until the book had sold enough copies to cover the advance. Then she’d start getting her royalties.

how have ancient greek philosophers impacted modern astronomy?

Best answer:

Answer by good4amber
The Greeks discovered that the earth was a sphere by several methods and the philosopher Eratosthenes measured the circumference of the earth to within about 300 kilometers of today’s generally accepted value. In about 200 BC Aristarchus first stated that the earth revolves around the sun but most philosophers argued that everything revolves around earth.

I have to write a “exhibition label” where you describe the theme of “scientific revolutions in modern art” and it has two be 1-2 pages long (double spaced) but im having soooo much trouble with it D: someone please help me. Here are the four pictures.

Death of Marat, by Jacques-Louis David

A Philosopher Giving a Lecture, by Joseph Wright

Iron Bridge, built by Abraham Darby & Thomas Pritchard

Improvisation 28 (second version), by Wassily Kandinsky

Best answer:

Answer by redunicorn
Death of Marat, by Jacques-Louis David Murat was a leader in the French Revolution.

A Philosopher Giving a Lecture, by Joseph Wright

Question by Richard O: Is it possible for a laymen to be a professor?
I have considered my self intellectually exceptional since my parents have always told me that but i now fear that i am just like everyone else and that scares me. I wish to pursue a Ph.D in philosophy. the only reason i do it is not for the money(the job market is very limited in that aspect). But because i genuinely want to learn everything i can about it. I even considered being a modern philosopher if possible but lately i doubt that possibility. I am a high school graduate, and for the most part high school was easy for me, i just never applied myself. English my my easiest assignment, math took some effort. I have not received a scholarship because well my grades were not Excellent. I am considering being an electrician as a trade to pay for college if the marines reject me. but i have met some individuals who were just entering high school as i was leaving and i was Absolutely blown away by their brilliance. This had me question my own abilities and scrutinize my motives and true potential. I have taken several seemingly legit online I.Q tests(i know they didn’t count but i consider them a rough estimate) the first time i recieved a 110, the highest i’ve ever received is 132. but i think my results are foley because of taking so many of these test and learning the patterns to the problems. so i ask anyone who has been through what i am going through, or if someone could remotely answer my question. am i a laymen, and or is it possible for me to accomplish this goal or will i end up being a tradesman the rest of my life and see my ambition become a fantasy?

Best answer:

Answer by eri
If you want to teach at the college level, you need at least a masters in your field, and a PhD to teach at the 4-year college or university level. You’re right in that there are very few job openings for humanities profs, especially philosophy where there really isn’t anything else you can do with that PhD besides teach. But what you do is up to you. You don’t need to have a genius-level IQ to become a college prof, and online IQ tests aren’t accurate anyway. I think those scores would suggest you’re not as exceptional as you might think, since online tests tend to inflate your scores to begin with, but really motivation is the key to completing a PhD.

Some people say that Plato has invented philosophy. But actually, if Plato would have not exist, someone else would have done it, so its actual contribution to philosophy is quite miserable, beside being the first.

On the contrary, EMINEM is one of the greatest modern philosopher if not the greatest philosopher of all time. He is smarter and has more talent. He has learn how to use popular culture and is microphone and his quick flow to communicate his philosophy with the masses. Plato could have barely accomplish this if he was born in the year 2000.

Question by Brad: Is Debra Medina the new star of the American Right?

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/feb/28/tea-party-debra-medina-texas

According to the London Guardian (probably the leading left-wing newspaper in Britain), she is. Here’s an excerpt from the article:

When it comes to speeches Medina is no Sarah Palin. She has no need to write on her hand to remember her talking points. Instead her speech was a complex walk through her extreme anti-government philosophy, citing sources as varied as the Austrian school of economics, St Augustine and modern French philosophers. She said she wanted to get rid of property taxes and allow Texans to do whatever they wanted with anything they owned, whether that was dig for oil or build an extension. There was, she said, no constitutional basis for a federal Department of Education or an Environmental Protection Agency or the Federal Reserve. Texas should assert its rights almost as a nation-state, controlling over its own National Guard units. The disdain for government was visceral. The American way, she said, was simple. “There are two rights essential to freedom: private property and gun ownership.”

discussion about a few modern philosophers like Leibniz and Wolff who talk about how it is possible to reason yourself towards full epistemological objectivity. I disagree.
